Depression Nested, 2017
Depression Nested is a video loop that uses both original and found footage in order to visualize the effects of mental illness in the virtual space. Science fiction is rife with examples of human consciousness uploaded to computers and reimagined as immortal virtual selves; this piece considers what it would look like for AI to retain attributes of its creator's mental illnesses in order to most accurately represent the creator's complete original self. Nesting in computing refers to information that is organized in layers, or where objects contain other similar objects. It almost always refers to self-similar or recursive structures. A depression nest is the environment occupied by a depressed person who is so beset upon with stressors that decluttering or cleaning becomes an impossible task.
