Echolocations (Virtual Face), 2018
Echolocations (Virtual Face) is a video installation/performance piece in which a video is played off of an iPhone suspended in front of my face by a headpiece. The piece shows the ways in which we use the Internet and social media to construct perfect versions of ourselves, so that others are forced to confront and understand our identities on our own terms. Additionally, it explores how the sharing of our constructed digital selves with others is an act of vulnerability, as these constructed selves often provide truer expressions of identity than is possible in physical life. The piece uses found footage as well as stock images and text-to-speech audio to construct an idealized virtual representation of myself. The video's main framework is a YouTube screen without any text. Video is played behind the frame, but also overlaid on top of it; through these overlaid components as well as first-person monologues, I invite the viewer into my constructed framework.
